In Search of Excellence "Coffee Shop"

In my routine quests to discover the best coffee shops and boutique roasteries around South Africa, especially in my neighborhood in Jozi, I am always surprised to find hidden gems. As a coffee aficionado, I constantly strive for excellent coffee and seek out an exceptional cup of joe along with beans that I can take home.

There is a quaint little hidden café called “Bean There” at Stanley on 44 in Auckland Park, close to the UJ and Wits university campuses. It is tucked away on the far left-hand side of the old building infrastructure at Stanley on 44. The place buzzes with coffee lovers and yuppies who want to seek inspiration away from their office desks and thrive off the energy radiating from “Bean There” Coffee Shop and Roastery.

I was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and equally impressed by the simplistic yet quirky décor, complemented by nostril-busting complex scents of various roasted coffee beans. The warm and welcoming baristas behind the bar were very eager to pull a shot of espresso to please your palate. I must not forget to mention the delicious home-baked carrot vintage cake, which almost tastes like matured five-year-old Christmas cake packed with assorted nuts and exotic spices—a must-try delicacy alongside a Sidamo shot of espresso or cappuccino.

There was a wide variety of artisan home-roast coffee beans from Congo, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya. All of them were hand-picked and selected by the Bean There coffee bean sourcing team. I got a few packets of choice Kenyan Nyeri, Ethiopian Sidamo, and Ugandan Kapchorwa. The barista behind the counter was incredibly enthusiastic to share the story behind each type of coffee bean and their roasting profiles as he ground my coffee beans.

To discover how I enjoy each coffee from its respective country and terroir, you'll have to wait for my next blog. However, if you're in a rush to buy these highly rated coffee beans, it's worthwhile to visit "Bean There" coffee shop at Stanley on 44 or call them to find out what is available on their shelves.
